The U.S. financial system began 2022 by sending a disturbing sign from the previous: Client costs and family paychecks soared in lockstep, conjuring reminiscences of a Seventies-style wage-price spiral.

Again then, the spiral dragged on for years, till the Federal Reserve stamped it out with excessive rates of interest that drove down inflation and pushed the financial system into recession.
